If you like free games and you like racing games, and you don’t mind the occasional platform game, then you should definitely check out the very free and very good Trackmania Nations. Trackmania Nations was released by Nadeo the maker of the Trackmania racing series, and the free Nations game was used as a promotional tool. Nadeo released it as freeware and it proved very popular among gamers almost straight away, probably even more popular to those who had already played the previous Trackmania games in the series and knew what to expect. I still know a lot of people however who have never heard or played any of the Trackmania games, and this is a travesty especially if you’re a fan of racing games.
Well Trackmania for the uninitiated is part puzzle, part racing game and part platformer which sounds like a very strange combination, if you add it all together though you end up with a strangely compelling gameplay factor and some serious replayability. And it’s this replayability which you don’t find that often in modern video games and what makes Trackmania so appealing to retro game fans.
In Trackmania you basically work your way through the game by competing in different event classes, like timed race, stunt mode and puzzle mode. In the free version Trackmania Nations you are limited to only one type of backdrop the stadium design, but that doesn’t affect the playability at all. Your aim in most cases is to get from one end of the course to the other, but this can often be hampered by giant loop the loops, flying leaps of faith and lots of crashing and re-spawning.
Trackmania’s forbearers are the classic Stunt Car Racer which has a similar strategy in death defying tracks with a competitive element. Well Trackmania has it all and is one of my all time favorite games. It’s free it, it looks good, it has tons of variety and it has tons of fun.
In the freeware PC game version of Trackmania you get 100 tracks in a variety of classes and can even get online and compete with other players of the game.
